MAY YOUR DISSATISFACTION RISE UP AND GRAB YOUR ATTENTION
YOU ARE UNDENIABLY SUCCESSFUL – YET YOU FEEL A LONGING, AN ACHE FOR SOMETHING THAT’S MISSING.
Scan all the pieces of your life pie chart that create a fulfilling and satisfying life – Work, Life Purpose, Family, Love, Finance, Fun, Health, and Development. Do you notice a glaring omission? An area of your life is likely underdeveloped.
In our fast-paced and frenzied culture, it’s easy to focus on and nurture the areas in life that either come naturally for us or yell the loudest. In my case – work was less risky than love; caring for others was much easier than caring for myself.
Following a dysfunctional childhood, private education, consequences from addiction, and finding recovery in 1988 – I spent decades career building, attempts at love, and taking care of others.
Eventually I ignored Love and avoided Self-care. I walled off my vulnerability and focused on work, advanced education, people-pleasing, and how to make others comfortable. I steered clear of risk and discomfort – and that cost me years of dissatisfaction.
AVOIDING THE HARD PARTS OF LIFE WILL SHUT OUT THE GOOD PARTS AND LEAD TO DISSATISFACTION.
How about you? What pieces of your life pie need attention? In what area(s) do you find yourself longing or yearning – and for what?
Notice that something’s bothering you. You may have been fine or blind to it for years… only now it’s starting to bring some dis-ease to the surface for you. Feel the nagging getting stronger, until you are twitchy, fidgety, itchy, irritable, distracted – something’s just not right.
RECOGNIZE THAT DISCOMFORT IS IMPACTING YOUR MOOD, PATIENCE, AND CAPACITY TO BE PRESENT.
Had enough? Stop fighting and sit with it.
Let the thoughts and emotions come to the surface. Turn off the electronics – the rings, beeps, pings, and chirps. Be still and quiet. Journal.
Maybe you’re only just now noticing that you’re not enjoying significant parts of your life. You’re dissatisfied. “How did I get here? I thought my life would be different.”
When you let the dissatisfaction rise up and grab your attention, allow yourself feelings of grief and loss. Your dreams haven’t come true (yet). Be prepared as your feelings surface. Your inner critic may chime in, “What is wrong with you? Why didn’t you pursue that instead of this?”
NOTHING IS WRONG WITH YOU.
It’s time to revisit the messages you received and absorbed in childhood. There are reasons you are exactly where you are right now, doing what you are doing and feeling the way you’re feeling.
YOU CHOSE YOUR RESULTS – WHERE AND HOW YOU ARE.
The area of your life that you’re avoiding may stem from negative and limiting beliefs from your childhood or trauma. It might subconsciously go like this: Growing up was painful. You swore you’d never be like your parents. Wall off. No one can hurt you or make you feel unloved or disappointed ever again.
Sadly, that negative thinking will keep you stuck in a walled-off state of extreme independence – being needless/wantless to spare yourself pain. Or you feel victimized and need someone to take care of you emotionally. Old messaging may be the root of your loneliness and isolation, and the reason you avoid it.
TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO EXCAVATE AND EXPLORE.
When you allow dissatisfaction to rise up and grab your attention, you can choose to develop the missing part(s) of your life. There’s a way to do just that. C’mon, this is your time!
I WISH FOR YOU THAT…
- You recognize that you’re right! Something is missing.
- Your dissatisfaction delivers enough discomfort to grab your attention so you’ll do something.
If you will identify the areas of dissatisfaction and resolve what’s blocking you – you’ll experience healing. This is the way to get the life you want. Satisfaction (at a minimum) will soon follow.
