HOW TO BECOME MORE ADAPTABLE AT WORK

Adaptable employees adjust to unexpected challenges with a positive and open attitude and willingness to contribute. Leaders value flexibility, resilience, resourcefulness and a willingness to contribute in ways that are - perhaps - included in the job description as "Others Duties As Assigned."

Before you start groaning... experience the benefits of being flexible, adaptable, willing and capable of contributing in diverse ways to your organization - and to your career.

Becoming more adaptable in the workplace will help you flourish in a dynamic and changing workplace  environment. Here are a few of my favorite actions to become more adaptable, flexible and agile at work:

  • Prioritize your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health to find life-work balance.
  • Cultivate a growth mindset - see challenges, changes and the unexpected as opportunities to learn and grow. Be open to new ideas and approaches, and view failures as stepping stones to success.
  • Be proactive - take the initiative to learn new skills and explore areas beyond your immediate responsibilities. Seek out new challenges and opportunities for growth.
  • Take initiative and ownership - show a willingness to take ownership of tasks and projects. Being proactive and self-driven demonstrates adaptability and resourcefulness.
  • Cultivate your own resilience - learn to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to changing, confusing or chaotic circumstances.
  • Network and collaborate - build a strong professional network and collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Expose yourself to new perspectives and approaches.
  • Stay calm under pressure - being in life-work balance will help you reduce reactivity, think clearly and handle high-stress situations with patience, kindness, generosity and flexibility.
  • Stay agile and flexible - be willing to adjust your plans and strategies as needed. Flexibility allows you to adapt to unexpected changes quickly.
  • Welcome change - instead of resisting change, view it as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Embrace change with a positive attitude.

This can be a gradual process that requires effort and practice. Your next step is to replace resistance, frustration, negative reactions and confusion with resilience, self-care and life-work balance.
