6 ESSENTIAL STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE YOUR NEW JOB
You finally gave your notice at work and have an exciting new opportunity all lined up. Congratulations! Even though you don’t have to be there yet, your self-talk starts up:
Hurry up – you need to get there and get going so no one thinks you’re lazy or entitled. You need to start immediately if you’re going to reach those goals – there’s no time to take time off. I wish I could take some time off before starting some place new; I’m wiped out.
Those of you in a hurry or concerned about what others think, keep reading. For those wishing you could take some time, please take this to heart.
Once you’ve given notice, you may tend to get busy getting from here to there. Assess, organize, and execute. Stuff your feelings. Ignore the fear welling up in your gut. Don’t slow down or you’ll panic. There’s just one thing about that…
YOU CAN’T OUTRUN FEAR OR STUFF YOUR GRIEF AND ANGER – AT LEAST NOT FOR LONG.
Trying to avoid these intense feelings can cause big problems and unwanted results. You pay a high price for staying exhausted, drained, depleted, and lonely. Self-sabotage hurts.
GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF TIME TO PROCESS YOUR THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, AND BEHAVIORS.
Your self-talk will tell you no… but you and I both know it takes time to process stored-up toxic thoughts and negative feelings about your former job. I’ve been where you are, done the work, and navigated this transition successfully. I offer you these 6 Essential Steps To Take Before Your New Job:
- Expel your stored-up anger and negative energy. This is important and takes conscious effort. Don’t skip this if you want to feel better physically and emotionally – and increase your brain functioning. Always be in an appropriate setting and hurt no one, including yourself.
- Process your painful thoughts, limiting beliefs, and grief. The last thing you want is to repeat whatever dissatisfied you in the job you just left. How you show up is predictive of what you will attract and be drawn to. You might consider a life coach to help you here.
- Rest your body and your brain. There is a myriad of ways to rest and relax. Be sure your approach includes sleep, healthful nutrition, peace, quiet, and movement. Spend most of your time unplugged.
- Reimagine. Tap into your creativity. As you allow yourself to breathe in positive energy, quiet your inner dialogue, calm your nervous system, and free up your brain’s bandwidth – you will make space for your imagination to resurface and your creativity to reemerge. Let these delicious gifts flow!
- Reestablish your YES and NO. When your energy and healthy emotions have returned and your inner struggle has subsided, you will be able to sense or feel when you want to say yes and when you want to say no. Practice, practice, practice. Speak up and tell your truth.
- Regroup. Restore your rhythm and routine. You’re closer to where you’re going than where you’ve been. Your mind, body, spirit, and soul are aligning, and you are experiencing contentment. Self-care is now non-negotiable. You’re in a graceful rhythm and ready to move on.
BOSSES AND EMPLOYERS WANT YOU TO BE ENGAGED, PRODUCTIVE, AND SUCCESSFUL.
When I’ve accepted a position with an organization, true to my values, I’ve taken on the responsibility to show up and be that way. To prepare, I’ve taken time off to decompress, self-examine, and clear residual negative thoughts and feelings. I’ve shown up at work as my best self, solution-focused, positive, and optimistic – ready to help my company reach its goals and have some fun doing so.
You have this rare opportunity to start a new position with your boundaries in check, your attitude at an all-time high, and a non-negotiable self-care routine that sets you up for success.
It’s natural to feel anxious when changing jobs. Overwhelming fear may be a sign that taking time off is paramount for your mental, emotional, and physical health.
Moving from one place to another without taking time in between may seem like the easier route but going through the experience with your eyes wide open and your heart ready to heal – that’s where change happens.
THIS IS YOUR CHOICE. CHOOSE YOU.
